Gratz.
Vegemight raised $500 dollars in a few weeks for charity. By definition, the fact we are playing wow means we are in a very fortunate place. Many are not so lucky. The people whom you have helped will never hear about Warcraft, or Vegemight. But that doesn't matter. We have left a mark on the real world as a guild.
Personally, I can't think of a better goal to strive for.
Thank you

And why the buffalo you ask??
For many poor farming families in Cambodia, owning a buffalo can mean the difference between hardship and survival. With your support, Oxfam Australia is helping Cambodian families start their own buffalo bank. A buffalo bank works on a very simple premise: a poor rice farming family, with no livestock, is given a female buffalo to help them work their fields, cart the harvested rice and use for breeding. In exchange for the buffalo, the family pays 12kg of rice to the community rice bank. Once they have their buffalo, the family learns how to care for it and keep it healthy - making sure that it receives twice-yearly vaccinations, gets the right foods to eat and doesn't work too hard when pregnant. Fingers crossed, the buffalo will produce enough healthy offspring to keep the 'bank' functioning.
In Cambodia, the market price for a female buffalo is too much for many poor rice farmers who struggle to grow enough rice to feed their families. Owning a buffalo can make a huge difference to a family - giving them enough food to eat and also preventing them having to work twice as hard planting rice by hand or give up a large part of their rice harvest to rent an animal. Buffalo bank recipient, Chrim Veng from Sma Koh in Cambodia, says having a buffalo has made a big difference to her family's life. "Before we had the buffalo, we grew rice by hand, not ploughing," Chrim says. "Now, we have food for six or seven months of the year. Before we only had enough food for one or two months of the year." |
